Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm, with flexible working available

About the Role

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Bookkeeper to join a well-established and growing accountancy practice based in Yeadon.

This is a varied role with a key focus on VAT, ensuring client records are accurate, VAT returns are completed correctly and clients are using the appropriate VAT scheme.

The successful candidate will ideally have at least 3 years' bookkeeping experience, preferably gained within an accountancy practice. You will be confident working independently, managing your own workload and dealing directly with clients.

You will also have the opportunity to support and train junior members of the team, helping to maintain high standards across the practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day bookkeeping for numerous clients
  • Check and process sales and purchase invoices, payments and receipts
  • Complete regular bank and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns
  • Check that clients are using the correct VAT scheme
  • Review VAT records and identify and resolve discrepancies
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records
  • Assist with monthly and quarterly management accounts
  • Investigate and resolve client queries and accounting discrepancies
  • Liaise directly with clients to obtain information and provide bookkeeping and VAT support
  • Ensure all work is completed accurately and within agreed deadlines
  • Work independently while managing a varied portfolio of clients
  • Review bookkeeping work to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Train, support and provide guidance to junior members of the team
  • Support the wider accounts team with ad-hoc client requirements

 

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 3 years' bookkeeping experience
  • Ideally, previous experience working within an accountancy practice
  • Experience managing bookkeeping for multiple clients
  • Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping
  • Strong VAT knowledge, including an understanding of different VAT schemes
  • Experience preparing and submitting VAT returns
  • A good general understanding of management accounts
  • Experience using Xero or similar accounting software
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organisational skills
  • The ability to work independently and manage your own workload
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence dealing directly with clients
  • The ability to work accurately and meet deadlines
  • A proactive approach with a willingness to support and train junior team members

Desirable

  • Experience with Xero, Sage, QuickBooks or similar
  • Previous experience reviewing junior bookkeeping work
  • Experience training or mentoring junior staff
